From an interview with composer Duberstein Burlingham:
They [the ABC music department] got in touch in the spring of ‘71. They were hoping to do with Donna Reed what CBS had done with The Lucy Show, carrying on the success of the earlier property. I was one of several chosen to contribute possible themes, along with John [Seely], who wrote the original show’s theme, and Hans [J. Salter] and Stu [Phillips] and a few others. They were looking for something “nostalgic,” and I really thought I nailed it. We had a session with the network orchestra that summer, and I’ve always been proud of the recording. Early fall they told me they’d gone with Stu’s theme—no surprise there, he was really on the make at the time—and not long after that I heard the whole show had been scrapped…
